The Olympics

Now that the Olympics in Beijing are being streamed over the internet (and can the internet actually withstand the onslaught, or will it crumble?), I can actually watch them on my computer. Sort of. We're stealing our neighbor's wireless, since we still can't afford a modem of our very own, but we've got no TV so this is it, man. The Olympics or nothing. And I heartily choose the Olympics. Ever since I started watching the gymnastics with my mom when I was eight--and what gay kid hasn't done the same thing?--I've always loved the pageantry and spectacle of the Olympics. And the athletes are just...beautiful. I mean, come on. They are. There's something so fatalistic about training 10-15 years to do this one thing, just this one thing, whether it's in a pool or on a mat or on some parallel bars. Your whole body is like a machine designed to kick the shit out of that pool or those rings. And it's amazing to watch.

There are 10 gay athletes competing in Beijing this year. Matthew Mitcham, the young Australian swimmer, is already came out famously just a few months ago. There's also:

Judith Arndt (Germany, cycling)
Imke Duplitzer (Germany, fencing)
Gro Hammerseng and Katja Nyberg (Norway, handball and a lesbian couple)
Natasha Kai (U.S., soccer)
Lauren Lappin (U.S., softball)
Victoria "Vickan" Svensson (Sweden, soccer)
Rennae Stubbs (Australia, tennis)
Linda Bresonik (Germany, soccer)
